Completed in 1885 the Lighthouse was originally built to seve as the Delaware Breakwater Rear Range Light. The light was decommissioned and disassembled in 1921 and reassembled on Gasparilla Island in 1927. the property was turned over to the state of Florida and became Gasparilla Island State Park. the Museum opened in 1999 and is operated by the Barrier Island Parks Society.
