In the late fall the white pelicans whose wings span 9.5 ft. migrate south. A majority of them wintering along the east coast in Sabastian, FL. In 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt designated Pelican Island off Sabastian’s coast the first national wildlife refuge for the protection of nesting birds by an executive order.
