Completed in 1885 the Lighthouse has a third order lens. The skeletal structure has a 127 step spiral staircase. The keepers cottages were used as headquarters for the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.In2022 Hurricane Ian destroyed the Keepers cottages and surrounding buildings.
The lighthouse was damaged but repaired and relit Feb. 2, 2023
